MALARIA

 

   SIGNS OF SEVERE AND COMPLICATED MALARIA

  • Cerebral malaria, defined as unarousable coma not attributable to any other cause in a patient with falciparum malaria.

  • Generalized convulsions.

  • Normocytic anaemia.

  • Renal failure.

  • Hypoglycaemia.

  • Fluid, electrolyte and acid-base disturbances.

  • Pulmonary oedema.

  • Circulatory collapse and shock (“algid malaria”).

  • Spontaneous bleeding (disseminated intravascular coagulation).

  • Hyperpyrexia.

  • Hyperparasitaemia.

  • Malarial haemoglobinuria.
